The team at The Break met Guus when he was involved in a program of social support for older people. He shared incredible, often unbelievable, stories about a life marked by war and fighting injustice. While his stories may have sounded outlandish, fact-checking with historical records consistently proved that he was telling the truth. Presented with such a remarkable man, The Break decided that his story deserved to be told. They arranged for a biographer and a team of support staff to record his stories, fact check information and publish it so his story is heard and he is remembered.
The Break was able to reconnect Guus with his daughter who disappeared at 15, and have been supporting him through a complicated legal process to pay for surgeries on his foot.
