Book 2 picks up after Guus has returned from his mission and is struggling to recover from his injuries. He tries his hand at a few jobs, before settling into a role as a diver with the Port Authority, collecting bodies of people who have drowned. When the constant presence of death becomes too much, he transitions to a first aid role, bringing him face to face with the criminal activity of the waterfront. An unexpected patient pulls him into the world of underground abortions, treating women who have suffered botched procedures. Eventually this brings him into the orbit of Dr Wainer, an abortion advocate, and his team of vigilantes trying to catch the corrupt police who are running the abortion racket. This launches Guus into a saga of catching corrupt police on tape and instigating two inquiries into police corruption, making him a target for corrupt police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guus 15-year-old daughter disappears without a trace. Later, Guus finds that the paedophile she had been involved with since 13 has not disappeared. A serial killer is also active in the area, and they suspect the worst, but the police are unhelpful in finding her. For Guus, his problems with the police don\u2019t end there. An inquiry covers up the police corruption he uncovered, making him a target. He leaves Melbourne for a quieter life, but the trouble follows him. A holiday park he owns is condemned, the bank calls in his loan, and when he sells the blocks of land behind his house to pay the bank, his new neighbours refuse to pay him, and cut off power to his house, setting a long \u2013 and expensive \u2013 legal process in motion. During all this, his trouble with the police continues. An officer assaults him during an arrest, police refuse to address his neighbour\u2019s interference, and a car accident that leaves him with a broken foot is dismissed as a fake injury. Financially ruined and permanently injured, can Guus salvage what\u2019s left of his life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
